Recognizing and Responding to Suicide Risk

A sampling of quotes from RRSR participants:

"After the training, I was doing an evaluation. My patient said that he thought about suicide 'once last week, but it was just fleeting, no big deal.' I asked him how many other times he has had these thoughts. After a long pause, he said, "every day for about the last year." I asked him to describe how he would do it. Turns out he had 5 highly lethal and accessible plans. I was able to get him into a long term inpatient program. Before, I may have just let the phrase "just once last week" go by without further investigation. He may have gone home while he waited in line for a bed to treat his Alcohol Dependence. I would not have had enough to get him into a co-occurring program immediately. Now I did. He went. He is alive today. (pretty humbling, and eye opening experience) So, I learned ALOT!!!!"

"All clinicians that come into contact or work directly with clients need this. I believe this should be mandatory training. Clinicians should be able to assess clients for suicidality. It amazes me that people do this work without training."

"An excellent training for clinicians new to the field and re-assuring for those with more experience."

"All Emergency Service workers should be mandated to take this."

"Having this knowledge is a hallmark of a good mental health practitioner."
