Recognizing and Responding to Suicide Risk in Primary Care

Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and PharmacyRecognizing and Responding to Suicide Risk: Essential Skills in Primary Care (RRSR-PC) is a one-hour training program that provides Physicians, Nurses/Nurse Practitioners, and Physicians Assistants with the knowledge they need in order to integrate suicide risk assessments into routine office visits, to formulate relative risk, and to work collaboratively with patients to create treatment plans.

The training package includes:

  • a facilitator-led slide presentation with video vignettes
  • reproduceable patient handouts
  • a pocket assessment tool

The RRSR-PC can be delivered in person or by webinar,
and 1.5 CME credit hours are available.

An adolescent version is available.

The goal of the RRSR-PC is for primary care practitioners and staff to learn current best practices in eliciting suicide risk when present and meeting the needs of their distressed patients.

As an additional resource, physicians wishing to address screening for depression and suicide more globally in their practices can access a Suicide Prevention Toolkit for Rural Primary Care, from the Suicide Prevention Resource Center. Hard copies of the toolkit are available for $25.00 through WICHE Mental Health Program, through Mimi McFaul at mmcfaul@wiche.edu or 303-541-0311.
