Alan L. Berman, Ph.D., ABPP
Lanny Berman has served as Executive Director of AAS since 1995. Prior to that, he was Director of the National Center for the Study and Prevention of Suicide at the Washington School of Psychiatry (1991-1995) and a tenured full-professor of Psychology at American University (1969-1991). He currently (2009-2011) serves as President of the International Association for Suicide Prevention. Lanny has published 7 books, the latest being the 2nd edition of Adolescent Suicide: Assessment and Intervention, and more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in Suicidology and suicide prevention. He is the recipient of both AAS’s Shneidman and Dublin Awards for outstanding research contributions to Suicidology and to suicide prevention and a past-president (1984-1985) of AAS. Board certified as an ABPP diplomat in clinical psychology, he is an elected Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the International Academy of Suicide Research. He holds a BA degree from the Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. from the Catholic University of America.
Amy J. Kulp, M.S.
Amy has been with AAS since 1995, when she was hired as the Administrative Assistant, and has been the Deputy Director since 2000. Amy also serves as the Director of the National Center for the Prevention of Youth Suicide, a program of AAS. Prior to coming to AAS, Amy was a certified crisis counselor at Grassroots Crisis Intervention in Columbia, MD. She was the recipient of the 2000 AAS Roger J. Tierney Award for Service. She holds a BSW in Social Work, and an MS in Applied Behavioral Sciences from Johns Hopkins University.
Director, Training and Accreditation
Karen Kanefield joined the American Association of Suicidology in 2009. As Director of Training and Accreditation, she oversees the professional training programs offered by the Association such as Recognizing and Responding to Suicide Risk - Essential Skills for Clinicians and Recognizing and Responding to Suicide Risk in Primary Care. She also works on training program development through contracts with the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and U.S. Special Operations Command. Prior to joining AAS, Ms. Kanefield was with the American Psychological Association for 12 years as Director of the Continuing Education Approval Office.
Project Portfolio Manager
Ms. Andrea Berman Price is Project Portfolio Manager. In this capacity, she manages training and research projects. She assists in fundraising and membership activities and promotes AAS publications. Ms. Price also supports AAS' early career professional development by directing the intern program.
Holley Jackson has been with AAS for 10 years (2004-present). Prior to coming to AAS he worked in the membership department of the NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) in Washington, DC. He currently handles all AAS conference registration, maintenance of all AAS computers, laptops & networking, office equipment, supplies, AAS database management, and sales, as well as keeping great relationships with a majority of AAS vendors.
Justin Ferrese has been with AAS since 2011, when he was hired as Communications Specialist. He currently handles all web communications, social media accounts for AAS, and maintenance of the AAS website. He received his BA in Digital Media from Duquesne University.
