- New York Governor David Paterson has declared Sept. 10, 2009 (coinciding with World Suicide Prevention Day) as "The Trevor Project Day" for the second year in a row. This statewide observance is meant to be a part of National Suicide Prevention Week. We will hold an event in the NYC area to commemorate "The Trevor Project Day" on Sept. 10.
- Likewise, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has released an official, substantive letter acknowledging and commending the work of The Trevor Project as part of National Suicide Prevention Week. In the letter, Gov. Schwarzenegger voices his support for The Trevor Project's work and LGBTQ youth suicide prevention efforts.
- Mayor Abbe Land of West Hollywood, CA (the city of our national headquarters office) will issue an official, citywide proclamation declaring Sept. 10 as "The Trevor Project Day" in West Hollywood. She will present us with the proclamation at a city council meeting two days beforehand.
- We are announcing a youth essay contest at the beginning of National Suicide Prevention Week. We will encourage LGBTQ youth to submit essays discussing their experiences of attempting or considering suicide (or feelings of depression, etc.) Some entires may be included in an anthology book we're working on in collaboration with Lambda Literary.
- A compelling op-ed piece discussing new research impacting LGBTQ youth suicide will be distributed to media during this week. If you'd like ANY additional information about our above activities, please let me know. We have many exciting initiatives planned for this important week of awareness!
