Many students recognize the importance of understanding and preventing suicide, but are not sure how to begin a career in suicidology. A former AAS Student Member wrote this helpful guide to becoming knowledgeable about the field of suicidology: Becoming a Suicidologist
Students who are interested in pursuing graduate degrees must also find a mentor to work with during graduate school who is an expert in the field of suicidology. A list of mentors can be found here: Mentor Database [Excel].
To receive certain advanced degrees related to suicidology, students must complete an internship. Some internship programs focus on behavioral emergencies like suicide, and many offer training in behavioral emergencies even if they are not a primary focus of the program. A group of psychologists and students compiled a list of APPIC pre-doctoral internship programs that offer training in behavioral emergencies. An Excel version of the Pre-Doctoral Internships with Training in Behavioral Emergencies database can be found at the APPIC website. A web-based version of the database can be found at the APA Division 12, Section VII website.
For recent graduates who are interested in pursuing post-doctoral training, a new database has been compiled that provides information about post-doctoral training sites and mentors. This database is located here: Post-Doctoral Training Database
